Why an Hour is 60 Minutes and not 100?

Friends, welcome to Crazy Wilds.

How many times do we check time in a day? We work according to our timetable.

Days, months and years passed in the same way.

Has this question ever come to your curious mind about why there are sixty seconds in one minute?

Why one hour is sixty minutes? Why can it not be more or less than this?

And why does one day have twenty four hours? Who finalized this time division?

Friends, you know that our pretty blue Earth revolves around the sun.

Earth completes its one revolution around Earth in 365 days.

But other than this, Earth revolves around in another way too.

After every twenty four hours, our Earth revolves around its own axis.

Because of this, days change into nights and nights change into days. This difference of day and night is due to Earth’s revolution around its own axis.

Not because of Earth’s revolution around the sun.

Then why does one day consist of twenty four hours and not twenty five? When and who did this division of hours?

This is also a question you may have considered. So let’s see this too.

Why does one day have twenty four hours?

My dear readers! The credit for distributing one day into twenty four hours goes to ancient Egyptians.

They divided day time into 10 hours, measured with devices such as shadow clocks because modern clocks were not available at that time, and added a twilight hour at the beginning and another one at the end of the day. In this way, they divided a day into twelve hours.

What is this shadow clock and how does it work?

To know this, we are back moving to the era when there was no invention of the clock.

That was three thousand years ago when Egyptians started to use shadow clocks known as sundials to divide a day into so many small parts.

This is the sundial you are seeing on screen. That was once used for estimating time. You can also imagine it as an earlier form of clock.

As far as the question is concerned, how was it used for finding time?

So friends there is a very simple thing behind this question that you can easily understand if you consider.

That is this: while standing under the sun, you may observe that your shadow becomes long for some time and sometimes it becomes short.

So this is the science of sundials. Ancient Egyptians estimated time by measuring the length of the shadow using sundials.

Now come to the night, because sundials can work in day time but during night when there is no shadow. Then how did they divide the night into twelve hours?

So my curious fellows, Egyptians, had divided night into twelve hours according to observations of stars.

Ancient Greeks had a system consisting of a group of 36 stars known as Decans.

Like the sun, stars also move in the sky as time passes.

By seeing the location of stars in the sky, Egyptians talked about night time.

For observation of Decans, Egyptians had specially prepared tables which were usually engraved on the coffin’s cover.

Through the help of these first made special tables, they estimated hours of night.

They have selected twelve stars for time measurement so that with the help of their position they measure time in full darkness.

In this way, twelve hours of day and twelve hours of night are equal to one days.

Difference between AM and PM?

Now, let’s see the difference between AM and PM? Ancient Egyptians have finalized 24 hours of one day.

And with the help of sundials they divided a day into twelve hours and with movement of stars they divided night into twelve hours.

All mechanical clocks showed 24 hours in the morning. The clock you are seeing on screen is actually the form in which early clocks were prepared.

But with the passage of time, clockmakers have realized that if they make clocks of twelve hours it will be easier and cheaper. Twelve hours for day time and twelve for night time.

To differentiate between day and night, AM and PM were started being used.

AM and PM are Latin words, used to refer to time.

In English, these terms started to be used from seventy century.

AM means ante meridiem is for time before midnight, before 12 in day.

And PM means post meridiem is for time mid day.

In easy words, from 12 in the night to 12 in the morning will be told as 12 am, 1am, 2am.

After 12 o’clock, the time will be 1pm, 2 pm, 3pm. Means PM starts at 12 noon and it will last for 11:99 at night. After this, it will change to PM.

In this way, the cycle of time goes on.

But friends, the clock of 12 hours is not as easy as you think. Even now, the 24 hour clock is mostly used around the world.

Because the countries we know the most are New Zealand, America, England, Australia, Pakistan and India . People usually use the half day or 12 hour clock.

That’s why we think people use this clock mostly, but reality is the opposite of this.

Now, 24 hours clocks are mostly used around the world. 24 hour round clocks are mostly used in Germany, France, Romania, and Vietnam.

So friends ,lets move to our next question. Why one hour is sixty minutes?

Why one hour is sixty minutes?

In this modern world, we use the decimal system on a very large scale. And its base is ten.

Nowadays, the decimal number system is considered very easy. Because my fingers are also ten.

So by this system, counting numbers becomes easier. We can easily count numbers on our fingers.

But in ancient times many other number systems were being used which included duodecimal, sexagesimal number systems.

Old civilizations used different numeral systems, specifically duodecimal (base on 12) and sexagesimal (base on 60).

So this division of sixty minutes is based on this sexagesimal.

This division was done by the Babylonians. Babylonia is a state of ancient Mesopotamia. And Babylonian city inhabited where today Iraq is located.

So those people by using the sexagesimal system of base 60 divided one hour into sixty minutes.

They did this because they can easily divide too many numbers.

You yourself see that if we do a division of sixty it can easily be divided by 1, 2 , 3, 4 , 5 ,6 , 10, 12 ,15, 20, 30, 60.

But if we have 100 seconds, then their division will be somehow difficult. Because 100 can only be just divided by 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100.

That’s why Babylonians used a base of sixty and divided one hour into sixty minutes and then one minute into sixty seconds.

So that 24 hours of day can be easily divided into different parts. And there will be ease while noting time.

So friends, how did you find this simple information?
